Charity of the Month

Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative

"The Milwaukee Homeless Veteran Initiative provides the services that homeless and at-risk veterans need to reach and maintain their highest level of independence"

Founded and run by veterans, we offer unique programs to fill the gaps and don't duplicate what others do. When possible, we partner with the Veterans Administration, Wis. Dept. of Veterans Affairs, County Veterans Service Officers, and other non-profit agencies. Since 2008 we have served thousands of veterans and their families in Southeastern Wisconsin. We don't leave our wounded behind. MHVI's six programs were designed to meet the needs of Veterans. Each program offers unique services to help make an impact.

WOVIN: Women Veterans Initiative

Founded by women veterans, WOVIN educates, advocates, and increases public awareness of the rising numbers of the increasing number of at-risk, homeless and under-served women veterans, and to help those women seeking information to help themselves and their families.

Bikes for Stripes Program

We provide free, donated bicycles to homeless veterans, who often have no other form of transportation. This is a joint venture of MHVI and Milwaukee County Veterans Service Office (MCVSO) to promote the health and mobility of Milwaukee County veterans. MHVI will make these bikes available to veterans.

Home Support

Many veterans we serve work hard to secure safe and stable housing. When they do, they often face a situation many of us do not consider…they do not have anything to put in their home – no furniture, household items or cleaning supplies. That is where MHVI steps in. We provide everything a vet needs to set up a household - furniture, household goods, bedding, toiletries, kitchenware, groceries and more. Nearly all are donated items and are supplied at no charge to veterans and their families. Many of the veterans we assist remain connected with us, receiving additional services to help them reach their goals.

Case Management

We assist veterans with specific services tailored to their needs. When a veteran connects with us, our Case Manager and the veteran build a care plan together, setting short and long term goals, connecting them to community services and checking to see they are following through on the referrals made. They focus on basic needs to ensure they have secure housing, medical care, clothing and food.

Emergency Food Pantry

To help veterans and families of veterans meet a short-term crisis need. For those veterans who are in short-term crisis, we have a food pantry where they can get several days' worth of food.  This fills a crucial gap for who need immediate help but cannot access regular food bank or nutrition programs.

Outreach Program

We do early morning searches to find homeless veterans where they sleep, and visit shelters and meal sites to find veterans in need. On those early-morning rounds, we offer food, toiletries, blankets and clothing. It is the first step toward building trust and getting them the help they need. Since 2008, we have made weekly visits to Repairers of the Breach, a daytime shelter, to meet with veterans and provide clothing, toiletries and bus tickets to allow them to get to medical appointments and job interviews. To help veterans begin to secure basic needs, we connect them with community resources and social services. We work closely with the Veterans Administration system to connect veterans to the services they may be eligible for.
